According to the report of news agency Reuters, the wholesale price of onion has almost doubled to Rs 33,400 per tonne in a month in Lasalgaon, a major producing region of Maharashtra. The retail price of onion in Mumbai has also gone up to Rs 50 per kg. The export of onions is still open, but if the prices continue to rise like this, then the government can ban the export again.

Significantly, the price of onions has been a very politically sensitive issue. Every year the price of onion reaches a record high for a few months due to this reason and again this year the prices are going upwards.

Traders say that this time onion will remain expensive in the festive season and relief is not expected before mid-January. A new crop will come in January.
