In 2007, Sanjay Kapoor of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and Nagendra Singh of SP was elected members of the assembly from the Pratapgarh Sadar assembly seat in 2012. In 2012, Nagendra of SP defeated Sanjay Kapoor of BSP.

Apna Dal Sonelal, the party of BJP's alliance partner Anupriya Patel, fielded a candidate from the Pratapgarh Sadar assembly seat in the 2017 elections. Sangam Lal, who landed on the Apna Dal ticket, reached the assembly after winning the election. When Sangam Lal was elected a member of the Lok Sabha in 2019, he resigned from the membership of the Legislative Assembly. Rajkumar Pal of Apna Dal was victorious in the by-election on the seat vacated by the resignation of Sangam Lal.
