Pakistan defeated New Zealand by five wickets in their first match in the T20 World Cup 2021. Now the Kiwi team will face Team India in their next match on 31 October. India also had to face defeat against Pakistan in its first match. In such a situation, this match is going to be very important for both teams.
However, before the match against India, bad news has come for Williamson's team. The team's star opener Martin Guptill suffered a toe injury during the match against Pakistan on Tuesday. Due to which his playing in the next match against India is doubtful.
Earlier, fast bowler Lockie Ferguson was ruled out of the entire World Cup due to a calf injury. Adam Milne has been included in the Kiwi team after Ferguson's exit. However, Milne could not participate against Pakistan due to a late replacement approval from the International Cricket Council's (ICC) technical committee.
Regarding Guptill, New Zealand head coach Gary Stead said after the end of the match, 'We will see how he feels throughout the night. He seemed a little uncomfortable at the end of the game. It may take 24 to 48 hours to see how deep his injury is.
Stead said he was disappointed that the International Cricket Council's (ICC) technical committee did not approve Adam Milne as a replacement in time to play against Pakistan.
He said, 'We tried a lot today to reconcile with the ICC for a replacement, but it did not happen. It was really disappointing for us because Adam Milne is the guy who is waiting to play as a replacement. We will seek clarification on his decision.
Stead was happy that his team put up a tough fight against Pakistan. But he admitted that the other teams in Group 2 will now fight for second place, to make it to the semi-finals.
He said, 'You would imagine that Pakistan is now the most favorite to get the number-one position in our group. And the rest of us are fighting for second place. In such a situation, the game against India becomes very important.
