The wind resource assessment conducted by the National Institute of Wind Energy indicates an estimated wind power potential of 695.5 GW at 120 meters above ground level in the country. The state-wise wind power potential is given in Annex.

The wind power generation capacity is higher than the level of the nuclear energy capacity. The installed wind power and nuclear power generation capacity of the country are 39.99 GW and 6.78 GW respectively, as of 31.10.2021.

The following steps have been taken specifically for promoting wind energy:

  • Concessional custom duty exemption on certain components required for manufacturing wind electric generators.
  • Generation Based Incentive (GBI) is being provided to the wind projects commissioned on or before 31 March 2017.
  • Technical support including wind resource assessment and identification of potential sites through the National Institute of Wind Energy, Chennai.
