Testing and certification will be done in the lab of all the electronic devices coming abroad. Only then can it be sold in the market. Actually, the Department of Telecommunications has issued a notification. According to this, testing and certification have been made mandatory to check for any security flaws in the devices coming from abroad. The new rules will come into effect from July 2022.

According to the notification, electronic devices can be sold or imported into the country only after testing and certification in any recognized lab. For this, the list of products has been issued by the Department of Telecommunications.

List Smart Watch and tracking such devices
, according to DOT covers products such as a smartwatch, tracking devices, smart cameras, smart electricity meters, and base tower stations for Telecom Networks (BTS) in the list. All these products have been implemented by the government after amending the Indian Telegraph Rules. Which have been issued as per Phase III of Mandatory Testing and Certification of Telecom Equipment (MTCTE) Compulsory Testing and Certification.

In the fourth phase, devices like optical fiber and point of sale will
be included. The mandatory testing and certification work for these products will start in February 2022.

Compulsory
Testing and Certification have been made mandatory to check for any security flaws in devices coming from abroad. Although the government had approved the proposal for mandatory testing of telecommunications equipment in 2010 itself, its implementation was delayed due to some World Trade Organization (WTO) regulations and other reasons. In the year 2017, these problems were overcome by amending the Telegraph Act.

Increase in the Number of Accredited Labs The number of Accredited Labs in the country has been increased
to avoid any problem in the supply chain. Labs accredited by Telecommunication Engineering Center (TEC) and International Laboratory Accreditation Corporation (ILAC) have also been made ready for testing and certification of products.
