१८ अक्टूबर १९४७ को पाकिस्तानी सेना ने कबाइली गिरोहों के साथ जम्मू-कश्मीर की रियासत पर हमला किया। २६ अक्टूबर १९४७ को एक 'इंस्ट्रूमेंट ऑफ एक्सेशन' पर हस्ताक्षर किए गए, जिसके बाद 27 अक्टूबर 1947 को भारतीय सेना को बडगाम ले जाया गया।
