The Secretary, Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM) tweeted on Friday saying, 'The Ministry of Railways has withdrawn its decision on IRCTC convenience fee.'

What did the Railway Ministry say?

In fact, the Railway Ministry had told IRCTC that 50% of the convenience fee received from ticket sales will have to be paid by the Railways (Ministry of Railways). With this decision, the ticketing margin was estimated to come down from 85% to 48%. Due to this, there was a huge fall in the share of IRCTC today. Its stock fell 29 percent to RS 650.10 in early trade on Friday.

It is noteworthy that online booking of railway tickets is done only by the Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC). It also provides food and drink in trains.

IRCTC had told BSE on Thursday that it will now share the convenience fee received from booking tickets from its platform with the government in the ratio of 50:50. This decision was to come into effect from November 1.

In the year 2019-20, IRCTC earned Rs 352 crore from convenience fees. This year i.e. in 2020-21 till August, IRCTC has got Rs 299 crore from it.
