The seized items were transported to the Koparkhairane dumping ground on September 19, 2024. The eviction involved a coordinated effort with officers from the encroachment department, 12 laborers, two pickup trucks, a dumper, local Nerul police, and security guards.

Background and Public Concerns

The demolition comes in response to growing complaints from local residents about the illegal encampments, which had become a hub for unauthorized activities. The slums posed safety concerns for pedestrians, particularly women, as around 20-25 people were reportedly sleeping on the footpath each night, creating an unsafe environment. Additionally, the presence of these slums was causing considerable inconvenience to the local community, with reports of lawlessness and unsanitary conditions being raised by local newspapers.

Unaddressed Illegal Constructions?

While the Nerul Encroachment Department swiftly acted against the slums, there are rising concerns about their inaction towards more significant illegal constructions proliferating in the region. Many citizens are questioning why these larger-scale illegal developments are not being addressed with the same urgency, raising suspicions about potential leniency or corruption within the local authorities.

Government Attention Needed

The state government’s intervention is now being called for to address both unauthorized slums and illegal constructions in Navi Mumbai. With such actions gaining public attention, the Nerul Division Encroachment Department has vowed to continue their anti-encroachment drive, but it remains to be seen whether illegal constructions will face the same level of scrutiny and action.
